Cardiology

At Antigonish Veterinary Clinic, we provide specialized cardiology care for your furry family member. Pets of all ages can be diagnosed with heart disease and other heart problems. Some pets are born with heart problems while others may develop them later in life. For more details on our cardiology treatments please do not hesitate to call our team at 902.863.3157 and we would be happy to answer any of your questions. As always, scheduling a consultation with your pet’s veterinarian is the best way to keep your pet’s heart and overall body in good health.

What are the symptoms of heart disease in dogs, cats and other pets?

Laboured breathing, reduced activity levels, coughing and weight loss/weight gain are all signs of heart disease. As you can see, these symptoms can also be signs of other health conditions. For this reason, bringing your pet in for regular wellness exams (at least once per year) is key to proper diagnosis and treatment.

What treatments are available for pets with heart disease?

When it comes to heart disease, a combination of treatments may be prescribed, depending on your pet’s unique case (e.g. the exact condition they have, which part of the heart is affected, their age). Oral medications, exercise for weight management and even surgery for a pacemaker may be required if your pet has an irregular heartbeat.

What causes heart disease in pets?

Some pets are born with it, while some develop heart problems as a result of lifestyle factors like diet and exercise. Injury and infection can also trigger heart problems. For example, a heartworm infestation can cause damage to your pet’s heart (and other internal organs like their lungs).
